Be Aware ! Air pollution can affect your Eyes

Air pollution leads to a major health impact on humans. However there is a lack of awareness associated with the effects. Many people resort to various air polluting activities without thinking about the effects on their health. In air pollution, the pollutants can be in the form of solid particles, liquid droplets, or gases. We need to understand that our eyes are incredibly exposed and sensitive to the pollutant which are there in the air. If anyone ever had the misfortune of getting dust or sand in eyes then you know the irritation and discomfort involved. The most frequently reported issue due to air pollution is blurred  vision. It also causes dry eyes and due to allergies your eyes can start watering. Air pollution in the form of smog ( a combination of smoke and fog) is the most harmful. Manifestations of air pollution can range from minimal or no symptoms to chronic discomfort and eye irritation.

Effects of Air pollution on Eyes

Symptoms of Dry Eyes and Allergy:

  • Feeling of dryness
  • Stinging or burning sensation in the eye
  • Eye soreness/itching
  • Stringy mucus both in and around the eye
  • Intense sensitivity to wind or smoke (eyes become more watery than normal)
  • Eye redness
  • Sticky eyelids
  • Blurred vision (normally at the end of the day)
  • Photophobia (light sensitivity)

How to Save your Eyes from Air Pollution:

Frequent Blinking

Our eyes need moisture to remain comfortable. Blinking helps provide this, along with nourishment.

Hydration

The first and easiest thing you can do is to stay hydrated. Your body needs to be hydrated for your eyes to produce the correct amount of tears.

Shield your eyes when you step outside by wearing Sun Glasses

Sunglasses are great for providing eyes with a basic protection from dust, debris, or sand blowing in the wind.

Indoor Humidity

Another easy way to protect your eyes is to increase the indoor humidity in home. The air outside may be dry, but that doesn’t mean the air in your home needs to be. This will help your eyes keep moist and has several other health benefits like keeping your sinuses clear!
