Crucial Case Study: Complicated Pregnancy by Dr. Alka Kriplani
In October, our team at Paras Hospital successfully managed the complicated pregnancy of a 35-year-old woman who was suffering from placenta accreta.
Placenta accreta is rare. It is only in 3 out of a 1000 pregnancies, though that number is increasing with the rising rates of C-sections.
It is a serious pregnancy condition that occurs when the placenta grows too deeply in the uterine wall. Typically, the placenta detaches from the uterine wall after childbirth. However, with placenta accreta, part or all of the placenta remains attached. It can cause severe blood loss after delivery and can result in the mother’s death. It can be handled only by very skilled gynecologists. With my skilled and experienced team, we saved both the mother and the baby.
The patient, Kanchan Bhatia, arrived at the hospital in Gurgaon complaining of vaginal bleeding. She was in her third trimester. She had been suffering for months, but hospitals had refused to admit her due to the severe complications that could have arisen because of the high-risk nature of the case.
We diagnosed her with placenta accreta and began managing the case. The case was critical but as doctors, we had to do all that we could to save the mother and baby’s lives. The case needed advanced medical care. The procedure used was a C-section delivery followed by a hysterectomy, the surgical removal of the uterus. As we have the necessary high-end equipment at Paras, we performed the surgery successfully and saved both mother and baby.
We kept Kanchan in the ICU for observation for a day after the delivery. She did very well in the post-operative period. She is keeping healthy and so is her baby. In such complicated pregnancies, I suggest it’s always better to choose a doctor and a hospital that one can trust. Me and my team at Paras has been working day and night to fulfill such dreams of our patients. We believe in what we promise. Always partners in health!
