Is Breastfeeding important for the Mothers

Breast milk is best for a baby; I think everyone is aware of this fact. Exclusive breast feeding baby for 6 months is good not only for baby but has positive effects for the mother also. Breast milk not only provides complete nutrition but also provides the child the antibodies to fight against various infections and diseases. Breast milk contains certain important ingredients which are never found in any formula milk and is easily digestible by the baby. In various studies conducted it has been proven that formula fed infants are at a higher risk of frequent Diarrhoea, Respiratory Infections, Ear infections and other diseases.

Mother’s gain too:

For mothers, breast feeding the baby for longer duration decreases the risk of Breast and Ovarian Cancer. It also helps them restore their pre- pregnancy shape and decreases incidence of post-partum depression. It has helps makes a strong bond between the baby and the mother.

In India more than half of the population is below the poverty line and nutrition, healthy diet are aspects of concern. Numerous awareness campaigns are being promoted to ensure that people understand the fact that Breast milk is the safest, renewable, and complete nutrition available free for the baby.

Breastfeeding importance for Mothers

Important aspects for Breast Feeding:

Breast Feeding the baby is the best gift any mother can give her child. There are certain guidelines to establish and sustain exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months:

  • Initiating breastfeeding within 1 hour of life – the first secretion from the mammary glands after giving birth – colostrums- should definitely be given to the child as the same is rich in antibodies and nutrients.
  • Exclusive breastfeeding – feeding the child exclusively with breast milk for the first 6 months is essential.
  • Breast feeding on demand – As the child cries it’s important that the mother understands that the same can be a request for breast milk. Regularly feeding the child with breast milk is essential.
  • No use of bottle, teats and pacifiers –the same are made of plastics that when put in the mouth can expose the child to many poisonous substances.
