Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous conditioned plasma, a concentrate of PRP proteins derived from patients own blood. It is a form of regenerative medicine that harnesses and amplifies the abilities of natural growth factors derived from platelets to heal tissues. These growth factors present in PRP about 5 to 10 times higher in concentration than in whole blood have been found to promote natural healing responses by researchers across multiple specialties, such as dentistry, dermatology, urology, orthopaedics, surgery and gynecology to name a few. There is a wide spectrum of clinical applications of PRP. Here is a brief introduction to the applications of PRP across different specialties.

  • Orthopedics – It is used to improve osteoarthritis especially that of knee joint, chronic tendinitis, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis.
  • Dermatology/ plastic surgery- It is used for hair regrowth in alopecia especially used for scalp baldness, facial rejuvenation. It is also used for scar reduction.
  • Surgical sites enhancement- PRP heals surgical sites two to three times faster than those of untreated surgical sites. It reduces the incidence of sternal infections after cardiac surgery.
  • Obstetrics and gynaecology – It is injected into the vagina to increase the pleasure and satisfaction associated with coitus so called ‘O’ shots or Orgasm shots. Used in Lichen Sclerosus to decrease size of their lesions. It is used to decrease scar after C section in women. Besides PRP has also been used in reproductive medicine to enhance endometrial growth and ripening in cases of infertility.

Apart from these, the technique can be used for chronic ulcer management, wound healing, aesthetics, soft tissue injuries, musculoskeletal problems such as tendinitis, arthritis, ligament sprains, and tears, athletic injuries, resulting in exceptional healing, a rapid return to regular activities, and complete pain relief. PRP injections reduce the need for anti-inflammatory or opioid drugs. Side effects are almost nil as patients own blood is used for PRP preparation. So, there is no risk of any infection. The blood bank at Paras Hospitals Panchkula is equipped to prepare PRP. Feel free to contact us in case of any requirement for the same.
