Senior Superfoods

For many, food is becoming more of a medicinal choice rather than purely sustenance. The superfoods that should be in your grocery list

Broccoli: A Cruciferous Vegetable
Cruciferous might sound like a big fancy word, but don’t let it scare you. These vegetables are high in fiber content and have many cancer-fighting benefits. Cruciferous vegetables include cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, etc. Dark leafy greens are high in vitamins and minerals and should also be part of a healthy diet.

Garlic: Nature’s Antibiotic
Garlic does a lot more than spice up your food and gives you bad breath. It is also one of the most pungent natural antibiotics, an antiviral agent, and even an antifungal. Who knew! Garlic helps prevent high blood pressure, lowers cholesterol and works to help boost the immune system against cancer. Other superfoods in the herbs and spice department include rosemary, ginger, and turmeric.

Orange Juice with Calcium

It isn’t just milk that builds strong bones and teeth, the Orange Juice + Calcium does too! One glass of this is equivalent to a glass of milk without all of the added hormones that are in cow’s milk. Good bone health with fiber and Vitamin D.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon taken daily as a supplement helps to reduce total cholesterol and is comparable to taking statin drugs. Another great thing about cinnamon is that it helps the body use insulin efficiently and cuts blood sugar levels up to 30 percent.

 Tomatoes

Lycopene found in tomatoes is a highly powerful antioxidant. Studies reveal that tomatoes, cooked or otherwise, reduce the risk of cancer in the gut as well as the prostrate.

Apples

Apples are high in antioxidants (specially the skin), but have many other benefits as well. Since they are high in soluble fiber, apples are great for digestion and can help lower cholesterol. Apples also contain vitamin C to further support the immune system.

Superfoods are foods that are loaded with nutritional value and powerful antioxidants that help reduce the risks of common health conditions such as heart disease, inflammation, low immune system, diabetes, and even cancer.
