Types of Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid Cancer is a rare type of Cancer in India. Thyroid cancer frequently presents without any symptom whatsoever.  When a symptom does present, the most common symptom is a lump in the neck. Less commonly, patients may have symptoms including hoarseness or change in voice.  Symptoms of pain are very uncommon except in inflammatory conditions of the thyroid and the rarer of thyroid cancers called medullary thyroid cancer. Depending on the type of cancer the treatment for the same is recommended.

Types of Thyroid Cancers:

  • Papillary Thyroid Cancer – Papillary thyroid.I t is common in children and women. Its exposure to radiation can be a cause. Papillary thyroid cancer is usually due to environmental causes.
  • Follicular Thyroid Cancer – Follicular thyroid cancer is second cancer from thyroid. It is also a type of well-behaved thyroid cancer but with a slightly higher risk of a spread than papillary cancer of the thyroid.
  • Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer – Anaplastic thyroid cancer is one of the types of thyroid cancers. It tends to spread fast both locally and to distant organs.
  • Medullary Thyroid Cancer – Medullar thyroid cancer is a specialized type of thyroid cancer that is hereditary in many patients. Some of the cases occur in young children.

Treatment for Thyroid Cancer:

  • Surgery – Surgery is a most important treatment for thyroid cancer. In most patients, removal of the whole thyroid. In some patients with the very early disease, removal of half of the thyroid may be sufficient.
  • Radiation Therapy – Using linear accelerator is useful in many cases of thyroid cancer when radio-iodine uptake is not good.
  • Radioactive Iodine Treatment – Radioactive Iodine scanning and treatment is an essential part of thyroid cancer treatment after surgery for well-differentiated thyroid cancers.
  • Thyroid Hormone Therapy –It is supportive care. Thyroid hormone therapy is a critical component of treatment in thyroid cancer.
  • Chemotherapy – Chemotherapy is the limited role. In Chemotherapy, anti-cancer drugs are made to enter the patient’s body by injecting them into a vein or muscle.
  • Targeted Therapy– It is an important part of thyroid cancer. There are so many medicines available in the market. like Vandetanib and Cabozantinib.
