Water is a critical and important element of the body and ensures that the body is adequately hydrated. The same also ensures that the body functions properly. Up to 75% of the body’s weight is made up of water. Most of the water is found within the cells of the body intracellular space. The remaining is found in the extracellular space which includes the blood vessels intravascular both space and the spaces cells interstitial space.

Symptoms of Dehydration:

  • Dry mouth.
  • Eyes stop making tears.
  • Sweating stop
  • Muscle cramps.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Heart palpitations.
  • Lightheadedness.
  • Weakness.

Many people mostly older adults, don’t feel thirsty until they’re already dehydrated. So that it is important to increase water intake during hot weather.The signs and symptoms of dehydration also may differ by age.

Symptoms of dehydration for Infant or young child:

  • Dry mouth and tongue
  • No tears when crying
  • No wet diapers.
  • Eyes, cheeks sunken.
  • Sunken soft spot on top of the skull
  • Listlessness and irritability

Symptoms of dehydration for Adult:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Less urination
  • Urine Dark colored
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion

Dehydration can lead to major complications:

  • Heat injury. Heat injury ranging in severity from mild heat cramps to heat exhaustion or potentially life-threatening heatstroke.
  • Urinary and kidney problems. Prolonged or repeated bouts of dehydration can cause urinary tract infections kidney stones and even kidney failure.
  • Electrolytes like potassium and sodium help carry electrical signals from cell to cell.
  • Low blood volume shock.This is one of the most major serious and sometimes life-threatening, complications of dehydration.
