When To Be Sure That Your Fever is Dengue?

Dengue Fever is one of most common mosquito borne disease caused by any of four closely related dengue varies.

Symptoms of Dengue start after 4-5 days post infection and usually last for 10 days. It starts with high grade fever, this generally does not come down with antipyretic in initial days. The following are the exact signs and symptoms that one should look out for Dengue:

  • Fever is usually associated with severe, headache, pain behind the eyes and severe joint & muscle pain.
  • Joint & muscle pain in Dengue is so severe that patient usually assume atypical body posture & unable to walk properly, this is the reason why it is called as break bone fever.
  • Patient may have fatigue & generalised weakness. Rather dengue fever usually appears after 2 to 5 days after onset of fever.
  • Some rashes can also be seen on the stomach and other areas of the skin.
  • Other haemorrhagic manifestation of Dengue may include bleeding gum, epistaxis haemorrhagic& hematuria.
  • Altered taste sensation, anorexia, sore throat, nasal stuffiness and lymphadenopathy may also be seen in Dengue Fever.

One of typical pattern of Dengue is that fever subsided after 4 to 5 days, but 6th day in considered as most dangerous, because changes of decrease in platelet count is more on 6th day. Usually recovery starts after 7th day and platelet counts starts improving thereafter. Recovery is usually complete in 10 days. Until there is secondary bacterial infection. The convalescent phase may last upto 2 weeks.

Patients are at risk of developing DHS & Dengue shock syndrome at the time to defervescence, which usually presents with abdominal pain, restlessness, change of mental status, drop in platelet count and bleeding manifestation, which needs aggressive intensive care management.
