Chin Surgery, also known as chin augmentation, is a popular surgical technique opted by people who feel that the shape of their chin is not right with respect to the rest of their face. Chin surgery is undertaken to improve facial proportion. The process involves changes made to the jaw bone in the form of reduction or enlargement brought about by adding implants.

The chin surgery is taken up by both men and women, and following are the cases when people consider going for such a surgery:

  • Pointy or squared chin
  • Receding chin
  • Fleshy neck
  • Prominent nose

Chin surgery can be an aesthetical need of the individual i.e. it is done to improve the person’s profile.

Chin augmentation is also described by terms like mentoplasty or genioplasty. Mentoplasty refers to the chin implants while genioplasty is the term used to describe a readjustment of the chin through a small cut.

The procedure starts with the application of general anesthesia followed by a cut made inside the mouth or under the chin on the outside. An implant of silicone or real bone from the patient’s own body is placed inside the cut, and is attached to the chin with screws after which the cut is sutured.

Chin readjustment may involve a cut inside the mouth or along the lower gum through which a bone chisel may be inserted to make a cut in the jaw bone. The jaw bone is moved and then screwed in the required position.

Other than common surgical complications like bleeding, infection, reactions the other risks could be:

  • Irregularities of the skin
  • Implant displacement
  • Swelling
  • Numbness
  • Loss of teeth
