The skin tends to increase the production of a pigment called melanin under the skin surface, mostly when the skin is exposed to direct sunlight. This extra melanin production makes the skin look darker or what we call tanned. However, in some cases this production is uneven, which leads to uneven skin colouring or patchy dark spots. Depending on the condition of the skin, the pigmentation can be called a tan, melasma or freckles.

Though majorly caused by intense sun exposure, pigmentation is a condition that can develop due to a number of other reasons, like:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Thyroid disease
  • Physical distress or injury
  • Allergic reactions to medicines or cosmetics
  • In rare conditions, extreme mental stress

Most pigmentation is caused by the Ultra violet light and is mostly harmless. But in the rarest conditions, unusually appearing pigmentation or spots can become skin cancer. Therefore, if you notice unexplained spots or pigments on your skin, get it examined by a dermatologist.

  • Treatment for Tan:

Tan can be effectively treated using a number of home remedies but for the treatment of major skin damage, treatment options like Chemical peels, Pixel laser treatment and other light based treatments, and through medications work best.

  • Treatment for Melasma:

Melasma is typically treated with Trichloroacetic acid peels and glycolic peels and Lazer and Light based treatments (Pixel, Q S and YAG). The treatment is suggested based on the duration of its on set, lifestyle and depth of pigmentation.

  • Treatment for Freckles:

Freckles can be easily dealt with Light based treatments like the Super Skin Rejuvenation and Pixel, Q S and YAG lasers.

The best protection from pigmentation is undertaking regular skin care programs and of course, using sun-protection and sunscreens.
