Psoriasis is a non-contagious disease of the skin that is chronic and inflammatory in nature. This disease can be genetically transmitted and is common to both females and males. Though psoriasis is mostly incurable, there are a number of treatments available to control it. The treatment may vary with respect to the severity of the disease and goes on to include topical treatments, systemic medications and light therapies.

The psoriasis treatments mainly aim at-

Reduction of the inflammation and the formation of the plaque by preventing the cells in the skin from proliferating

Smoothening the skin by reducing or removing the scales

These topical treatments are normally the first ones to be offered for psoriasis and come in the form of gels, creams, sprays, foams and so on.

They bring about reduction in scaling and sloughing of the dead skin cells and come as ointments or as shampoos at medical stores.

It reduces the inflammation, scaling, itching and skin proliferation.

They can be used alone or as a combination with other topical treatments. Calcipotriene cream is one such Vitamin D derivative.

The retinoid are Vitamin A derivatives.

It also is available in the form of skin creams, ointments etc. and results in smoothening of the skin. However, there are side effects as well.

Light therapy or phototherapy involves exposure of the skin to a controlled amount of sunlight and can involve natural or artificial sunlight. It reduces skin turnover, inflammation and scaling thus helping in smoothening of the skin. The popular phototherapy treatments include UVB phototherapy, narrow UVB phototherapy, PUVA, and Goeckerman therapy.

Other treatments come in the form of oral drugs like oral retinoid and injections. Avoiding the consumption of dairy products and liquor, and following the diet prescribed by the doctor can help control the effects of psoriasis.
