Inflammation of tonsils is called tonsillitis. Tonsils are two oval shaped pads at the back of the throat. The main function of tonsils is to help fight infections. They contain B-cells, and also produce anti-bodies to fight numerous infections. Inflammation interferes with their ability to do so. Tonsillitis is a common occurrence, with more than 10 million cases reported every year in India. Tonsillitis affects ages 4 through 40. Children are the most susceptible to this condition, and cases of patients over 40 years of age are extremely rare.
