Darbhanga, 6 June: Paras Global Hospital, Darbhanga organized a health talk for awareness about osteoporosis and osteo-arthritis which was attended by hundreds of people. Ortho-surgeon Dr. Sanjeet said that one could escape these ailments with a balanced life style, food and physical exercise. Osteoporosis, he said, is generally found among women and worldwide one out of three women above 50 is gripped by this disease and almost 80 per cent women are affected by this ailment. He said so far 2.5 crore people in India are estimated to suffer from osteoporosis and osteo-arthritis and in some years this number could increase to 3.6 crore. About 15 lakh fractures take place every year due to this.
The main symptoms of osteoporosis include backache, pain in wrist and knee, fracture, leaning forward and inability to walk straight.
The risk factors and causes as per Dr Sanjeet, Orthopedics and Joint Replacement Consultant, Paras Global Hospital Darbhanga included lack of calcium ad protein in food, problem with thyroids, changing lifestyle, cigarette smoking and wine consumption, cold drinks, consumption of steroid and hormone drugs, stoppage of menstrual course before time and hysterectomy.
Dr Sanjeet also highlighted intake of calcium, vitamin and protein in food, consumption of curd, milk, paneer, egg and at least 20 minutes exercise every day apart from taking apple, coconut oil, pineapple, tea and coffee on regular basis could reduce the threat of these ailments.
The treatment of osteo-arthritis is physical therapy, load reduction, corrective osteotomy, joint replacement, medicine for protection of cartilage etc.
