Leading cancer surgeon of Delhi NCR – Dr Vinay Sameul Gaikwad, HOD Surgical Oncology at Paras Hospitals Gurgaon has organized a special coffee session to discuss about the signs and symptoms associated with Gastrointestinal Cancer. The coffee session is scheduled for August 25, 2018, at 11:00 am in Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon – Auditorium.
Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancers are one of the most common cancers worldwide. Overall, the GI tract and the accessory organs of digestion (pancreas, liver, gallbladder) are responsible for more cancers and more deaths from cancer than any other system in the body.
According to Dr Vinay Samuel Gaikwad, HOD GI Cancer Surgery, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon, “According to recent studies more than 30% of the patients who are diagnosed with GI cancer are diagnosed late and start their first line of treatment in stage 4 – an advanced stage of cancer, which is characterized by exponential progression of the cancer cells, leading to lower survival chances.”
He further states, “The most important aspect with GI Cancers are the silent signs and symptoms. Majority of the patients consider alarming signs such as constipation, blood in stool, indigestion or persistent heartburn as routine ailments and end up just opting for home remedies to address the same. It is important for us to understand that if any symptom turns chronic and if the patient does not get any relief within 1 week, consulting a doctor is a must.”
The gastrointestinal (GI) cancers include tumours of the gallbladder, liver, pancreas, bile duct, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum and anal canal. The coffee session would provide a platform to patients to discuss their signs and symptoms, preventive measures and the action plan for diagnosis & treatment.
Dr Vinay highlights, “Cancer is a very scary term and is usually associated with death. However, if the cancer is timely detected and treated, lives can be saved and a patient can be cured. Depending on cancer and the extent of its spread the modality of treatment is decided. The same can be just surgery or chemotherapy. In some cases radiation therapy may also be required.”
Dr. Vinay Samuel Gaikwad is a reputed and exceptional Gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatobiliary (GI & HPB) cancer surgeon. Dr. Gaikwad specializes in Advanced Minimal Access Surgery and HIPEC. He also has expertise in Pancreatic and Liver Cancer Surgery, Laparoscopic Colorectal and Upper GI Cancer Surgery and Neuroendocrine Tumours, to list a few. He has undergone specialized training in Advanced Minimally Invasive Upper GI Surgery, IRCAD at Taiwan and has also gone through a dedicated Certified 2-year fellowship in GI and HPB Oncology, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. Over the years he has successfully handled numerous complex cancer surgery cases.
Highlighting the importance of the awareness associated with GI cancer signs and symptoms, Dr Vinay shares, “People with one or more persons in the family (blood relation) who have been diagnosed with cancer have a higher risk and should be more attentive. Appropriate examination and investigations should be advised, as per the demand of the situation. Prevention is better than cure, so routine check-ups are recommended with increasing age to identify cancer sometimes even before it is fully developed. A family history of cancer is also a reason to undergo regular health checkups.”
