Reputed Liver specialist of Gurgaon – Dr Rajnish Monga, Chief of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Paras Hospitals Gurgaon has launched a special initiative – Coffee with Gastroenterologist, to sensitize the public about Fatty liver – a disease that has expected to affect every 1 in 5 individuals in India. The liver specialist along with Paras Hospitals will be hosting the Coffee session, a special health discussion, on July 28, 2018 in the hospital auditorium.
According to Dr Rajnish Monga, “The aim of Coffee with Gastroenterologist is to sensitize the common man about the rising incidences of fatty liver. The lifestyle and the food habits today are major risk factors for non-alcoholic liver disease. Our OPD data highlights that Fatty Liver caused due to Non Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) is the second most common liver ailment. Other than that alcohol leads as the risk factor for liver disease.”
The most common cause of fatty liver is alcohol use disorder and heavy drinking. In many cases, it’s much less clear what causes fatty liver in people who don’t drink much alcohol. However, higher body weight, a high processed sugar diet, high triglycerides, diabetes, low physical activity, and genetics all play a role. Fatty liver develops when the body creates too much fat or cannot metabolize fat efficiently enough. The excess fat is stored in liver cells where it accumulates and causes fatty liver disease. Other reasons to cause fatty liver are – obesity, hyperlipidemia, or high levels of fats in the blood, especially high triglycerides, diabetes, genetic inheritance or rapid weight loss.
He further states, “Fatty liver, or hepatic steatosis, is a term that describes the buildup of fat in the liver. It’s normal to have small amounts of fat in your liver, but too much can become a health problem. The liver is the second largest organ in the body. It’s responsible for a wide variety of functions, including processing everything we eat and drink, and filtering harmful substances from the blood. Too much fat in the liver can lead to long-term liver damage.”
Medical science highlights that usually the liver tries to undo the damage caused by a fatty liver and heal itself, however if it unable to do so or if the damage is chronic, the patient can suffer from liver failure or cirrhosis.
Dr Monga shares, “Fatty liver typically has no associated symptoms. However, research has shown that about 20 percent of people with fatty liver inflammation progress to worse conditions. If this occurs you may experience fatigue or abdominal discomfort. Your liver may become slightly enlarged, which your doctor may be able to detect during a physical exam. It’s believed that the excess fat in the liver, along with certain medical conditions, increases inflammation. If your liver becomes inflamed, you may have symptoms such as: A poor appetite, weight loss, abdominal pain, physical weakness, fatigue, confusion. If anyone is facing the above mentioned signs and symptoms, it is best that you consult a liver specialist at the earliest.”
