Patna, 02 December 2017: PARAS HMRI super specialty Hospital, located at Rajabazaar, Patna came to the rescue of a 27 year resident of Gaya by helping him get back to his normal way of walking. Pressure on his sciatic nerve resulted in enormous pain, because of which he could not walk properly. He used to face trouble carrying out everyday chores. The surgery that was done by Dr. Gautam Prasad took around 35 minutes and the patient could walk properly within 16-17 hours of operation. The patient and his family were taken by surprise and considered it no less than a miracle.
Dr. Prasad revealed that the right side of the patient’s body had sciatica because of which he could not walk. He further explained that the backbone consists of the spinal cord which branches out into various veins, which in turn provide strength to the hands and legs. Any pressure on the nerves causes sciatica. Ruptured discs that exert pressure on the spinal nerve roots, lifting heavy weights and fatness result in spinal compression. 90% of the patients normally recover after 3-4 days of rest and after taking proper medicines. Later on, they are also provided physiotherapy. Only 10% of such patients have to undergo surgery. The operation earlier used to be done, by making a big incision. However it can now be done through MISS (Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery), which is also referred to as microdiscectomy, and it can be carried out by making a small incision into the patient’s body, thereby, making the complex process a lot easier. The disc is removed eventually, removing pressure on the nerves, leading to proper blood circulation. Above all, the patient is not forced to stay admitted to the hospital for too long and also gets instant relief and starts leading a normal healthy life.
