Patna, 08 March 2018: Paras HMRI super specialty hospital, Raja Bazaar, Patna, in a bid to raise awareness on organ donation carried out a march with school children on Thursday at 7:00 AM from Maurya Lok to Red Cross building at Gandhi Maidan, Patna. They were accompanied by Dr. Ajay Kumar, Director, Institute of Urology, Nephrology and Kidney Transplant, Paras HMRI Hospital.
Dr. Ajay Kumar, said on the occasion, “In India, compared to men, the number of women is more when it comes to organ donation. Hence, we aim to spread awareness on organ donation among men through the march. Since women outnumber men in organ donation, the theme of this year’s World Kidney Day is ‘Kidney and Women’s Health.’ Women are charitable and participate in household chores with great zeal. However, they do not get the right amount of attention they deserve. 80% of the kidney donations in our country are made by women, be it a mother, a wife or a daughter. Unmarried sisters donate kidneys the most. Hence, it is important that women stay healthy, both physically and mentally. Their empowerment in all spheres of life is important. In the absence of women, who will donate kidneys?
Talking about the number of kidney patients in the country, he said, “4-17% of the people suffer from kidney diseases in India. As per an estimate, 1 lakh to 5 to 25 patients require kidney transplants. More than 1.5 lakh kidney patients wait for kidneys to be transplanted. In Bihar, the number of such patients has been rising. The main reason behind the disease is the rise in air pollution, water pollution, contaminated food. Contaminated food refers to food that has chemicals, including fruits, vegetables, grains that enter our bodies through food.
Elaborating on the reasons behind kidney failure, he said, “One should prevent taking painkillers as much as possible as they damage the kidney. Women take such medicines quite often and continue with their household chores. I request them to avoid taking these medicines as much as possible. Diabetic patients must keep their BP in check at all times. When the kidney gets damaged, the BP does not stay in control because a fluid that comes out of the kidney does not let it happen. Pregnant women must regularly get their urine checked. In case they detect an infection, then they must consult an expert immediately. They must not neglect any signs of urinary tract infection or else they may face kidney failure.
