A bone marrow transplant (BMT) unit will be launched by Dr. Mammen Chandy at Paras HMRI Hospital, Patna, on July 30, 2016 at 10.30 AM. With the launch of this facility, the hospital becomes the first institution in the region to provide a standalone dedicated facility for bone marrow transplantation. Alongside, a Continuing Medical Education (CME) campaign organized, where experts deliberate upon recent developments and advancements in the treatment of myeloma (a malignant disease arising from plasma cells in the bone marrow).
“We proudly declare that this is the first ever BMT Unit to be set up in the state of Bihar. Patients requiring bone marrow transplants no longer need to go out of the state. Paras Cancer Centre will facilitate Bone Marrow transplant to Cancer patient at your doorstep. The pre-tested BMT unit will be a boon to patients affected with thalassemia, leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and other such diseases,” says Dr. Jawed.
A bone marrow transplant process involves many stages. “The whole procedure needs meticulous planning. Our new bone marrow unit will take care of the patient’s pre-transplant evaluations, internalization, conditioning as well as long-term monitoring after the transplant. Before transplantation, the specialists will provide detailed information to the patient, answering important questions of the whole process and long-term implications, if any.” adds Dr. Jawed.
Bone marrow transplant is a complex but lifesaving procedure; hence it is important to take an informed consent before undergoing the transplant. “A bone marrow transplant does not involve the physical insertion of the marrow stem cells into the recipient, but is more of an intricate and delicate blood transfusion method. Our new BMT unit will have state-of-the-art facilities for executing both autologous and allogeneic transplants,” said Dr. Avinash.
The launch of the BMT unit at the hospital will be followed by ‘Patna Myeloma Update 2016’, which will be held at Panache Hotel, Patna from 11 AM-4.30 PM on the same day. This CME will be accredited by the State Medical Council and attended by renowned hematologists and oncologists from Eastern Hematology Group. The main event will be accompanied by lunch and high tea.
The agenda of the discussion at the CME will revolve around updates in the management, diagnosis and supportive care for myeloma. Some of the eminent guest speakers attending the event are Dr Mammen Chandy, Director, Tata Medical Cente, Kolkata; Dr Tejinder Singh, and Dr R K Jena, HOD, Dept of Clinical Hematology, SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.
“Paras HMRI Patna is the first hospital of the region to have a Hematology Division. Our expert team of hematologists has an in-depth understanding and clinical acumen for blood diseases. We understand that bone marrow transplant is a serious treatment. Therefore, we have built the most advanced infrastructure to deliver best outcomes for bone marrow treatment at the most affordable cost.”
