Patna, August 04, 2018: World Bone and Joint Day is not a mere celebration but an opportunity where we sensitize the society about the increasing impact of musculoskeletal conditions and promote cost-effective prevention and treatment. The union ministry of health has decided to observe such a day to focus on treatment related issues concerning bones and joints following a request from the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA), which stressed the need to create awareness among people on the growing problem related to bones and joints.
To commemorate the Bone and Joint Day, Paras HMRI Hospital, Patna conducted three free surgeries which is a welcome step for the poor people of the state. By doing so, the hospital played a good Samaritan role in its objective of providing essential medicare services to the people of Bihar.
Dr John Mukhopadhya, Director, Orthopaedic department, Paras HMRI Hospital, Patna shared, “We have conducted three free surgeries on the occasion. The surgeries were done by the team of the orthopaedic department of the hospital. Today due to the rising ageing population and increasing accidents, the health problems related to bones and joints have also amplified. Such initiatives are small contributions to ensure that the poor patients also have access to super specialized healthcare.”
These operations are done for the poor patients as part of Indian Orthopaedic Association’s initiative, Dr Mukhopadhya also added, “The surgeries are being done for those patients who could not afford costly surgeries.” We are doing this as part of our social responsibility, Dr Mukhopadhya further said and adds, ‘It encourages the orthopaedic surgeons to do free surgeries. The purpose of observing this special day was to encourage people to give back to society.’
Dr Talat Halim said, “Observing such a day has become essential, especially in circumstances where the problems like arthritis osteoporosis among the ageing population are becoming a major cause for disability.”
One of the three patients who has been operated on August 4 is a young boy with bone tumor. Another one was a young lady who had severe deformity in both of her feets which was not corrected even after multiple surgeries. The third patient operated upon had a fracture where the bone became deformed which is very difficult to heal.
